Malnutrition, in addition to causing our general mental preoccupation with food, probably causes us to lose our libido completely. Around midnight we passed one of Vienna’s railway stations. On our way, we passed the street where I was born; we passed in front of the house where I had spent many years of my life; I had lived there before my captivity. There were fifty of us in that compartment, which had two small barred openings. There was only so much room that one group squatted on the ground, and the rest, who had to stand for hours, gathered around the two openings.

I, standing on tiptoe and looking out from the middle of other people’s heads through the bars of the opening, briefly took a strange look at my native city. We all felt dead than alive because we thought we were being transferred to the Maute weight camp, where we would only live for a week or two. I instinctively felt that I was looking at the streets, squares, and houses of my childhood with the eyes of a dead man who has returned from the other world and is looking down at the ghost town.
