In a part of the book of A Promised Land Free Download, we read:
A Promised Land Free Download: Sometimes this same guard had to hold back the surprised crowd that followed me. If I had time, I would stop, shake their hands and ask where they are from. Most of the time, I kept going, passing through the front room and into the oval room. I would chat with my employees, get a work schedule and hot tea, and start the day.
A few times a week, I would go out and visit the guards of the Rose Garden. The security service employs all Rose Garden employees. Most of them were older men in green and khaki uniforms. Sometimes they put a hat the same color as the uniform on their head to protect them from the sun, or they wore an oversized coat to ward off the cold.
If I was still in time, I would have complimented them on the newly planted plants or inquired about the conditions after the storm. They explained their work with pride. They did not talk much. Even among themselves, they convey their meaning by pointing their heads and hands. Each focused on an individual task, but simultaneously, they were coordinated. One of them was a tall black man with freckled cheeks. The Rose Garden’s oldest member, Ed Thomas. He had worked in the White House for forty years.
The first time I saw him, he quickly took a handkerchief from his back pocket and wiped his dirty fingers before shaking my hand. His hands were like tree roots, veiny and wide, and he swallowed my hands thoroughly. I asked him how many years he would like to work in the White House before retiring.
He answered: “I don’t know, Mr. President.” I like to work, but recently my body hurts a bit. As long as you are the president, I will work here to ensure the garden is fresh and beautiful.
