Biography of Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Saint Exupery was born in 1900 to an aristocratic French family. His father died when he was four years old, and the family had financial problems. He had three sisters and a younger brother. His brother died of illness at the age of 15. When his brother died, Saint-Exupery was by his bedside and wrote:

«… The moment remained motionless. He didn’t moan. It fell as slowly as a young tree.»

He later wrote the book “Little Prince” in simple language. Saint Exupery was 17 and was now the only man in his family.
He twice took the Naval College entrance exam but was rejected. For a year and a half, he went to architecture classes at the Faculty of Fine Arts as a freelance professor, and after that, he used to go from one job to another. Then he went into military service and, at the same time, went to private pilot classes. After a while, he was transferred from the army to the Air Force. After several air crashes, he dropped the pilot because of protests from his family and fiancée, Louis Ok de Wilmore. After a while, their engagement broke up, and Saint-Exupery went back to piloting and touring jobs.
He mostly used airplanes to transport postal packages. The planes didn’t have much equipment or settings at the time. In the words of Saint Exupery, in new aircraft, pilot work is more like accounting than piloting. He moved postal packages between France and Africa, and his flight route passed over the desert and sea. A few years later, he moved to Argentina and became the director of the air post there.

What is Antoine de Saint-Exupéry famous for?

Saint-Exupery won the prestigious French Literary Awards and the American National Book Award. His fame is due to his book Little Prince and his lyrical writings entitled Human Earth and Night Flight. His work, including The Little Prince, has been translated into 300 languages and dialects.

When the Second Front opened, and the Allied forces disembarked off the coast of France, he returned to France once again with the rank of Colonel of the Air Force. On July 31, 1944, he flew over occupied France from The Island of Kress in the Mediterranean and was never seen again.

The reason for the crash was never known. Still, in the late 20th century, after the wreckage was found, it appears that, contrary to earlier claims, he was not the target of the Germans, as there was no sign of an arrow on the plane, and it is likely that a technical malfunction caused the plane crash.

Beautiful sentences from Saint Exupery’s Night Flight

“I’m getting old.”If he were no longer happy at work and just at work, he would have aged. Suddenly, he realized that he was thinking about things that he had refused to pay attention to at the time. Within his mind, like the lost ocean that estimated the sound of his grief, all the quiet joys of life he had longed for came to life came to life. “Is it that old age has gripped me? That’s so soon?” He gave himself heart and abandoned his thoughts: “I love these people under me. I don’t disagree with them, but I can’t entirely agree with what happens to them…” His heart was beating fast, and he was hurting her. “No, I can’t say whether my work is right or what the right price is for human life or the value of suffering and justice. How do I know the value of another happiness? Or worth shaking hands? Or the value of kindness or mercy?”
